Southern Motor 408 Pickup

Yesterday one of our members posted a message on the forums about a new truck that will be produced by a company that seems to be trying a new tactic on custom vehicles and marketing. The truck in questions is the The Southern 358 from Southern Motor Company

It looks from all intents and purposes to be a newly built truck that has the appearance of a 50 year old one. This has many benefits in that you do not have to worry about hidden problems or errors. It is being built with 21st century technology. It also has all the advantages of a new car as well. This one is even going to be equipped with air bags on both the drivers and passengers sides.

The press release states that they will be making only 1200 of them total. With only 100 being built the first year which will be 2008. They will be covering this vehicle with a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty. Which is not something you see very often when dealing with a custom vehicle builder. One of the items that most concerns me is that they do not spend much time addressing how they will be addressing the emmisions issues. Just because they will be using a new 5.4L chevy motor does not mean that they will be using the factory settings. Which means that it might not meets the standards of your community.

I think it is an ingenious plan but I worry that it is too ambitious. I would hope that the backers of this project have taken note of the problems that faced the debacle of the Street Beast. They also need to make sure that it is built in much the same fashion as the original so that the parts interchange with stock trucks too. Marketing aside when you advertise a product you need to give the consumer a product that they will be willing to trumpet the praises of. It is a reality of today's society that any mistake that is made when dealing with a customer is going to be spread across the Internet in short order. I do think they might have worked on this, they have made it clear that you are required to make a deposit of $10,000 to order one. This money will be put into an escrow account and if you choose to not purchase the truck your money and any interest it accrues will be returned to you.

I would like to see this become successful for them as they would probably branch out into other models after this run is over.
