Bruce, what steering box are you running? The aftermarket 500-series boxes are a big step up from a 60 year old original or modified 605 retrofit.

I suspect that's a pretty highly stressed area since it's right where the rear suspension kick up starts. Looks like it ought to be fine to weld the crack then weld another plate over the top. Someone ...
